The last Friday in November is the day of the annual bargain hunt. It's "buy, buy, buy" and many things disappear after a short time never to be seen again in the back corner of the closet. Of course, we don't want to promote exactly this kind of consumption, but we still offer you special discounts on Black Friday. But why?
Because as a sustainable company, we want to make it easier for you to choose the climate-friendly alternative, environmentally friendly materials and a better conscience in the jungle of offers.
How the sustainable Black Friday looks like with us we explain to you in this post.
What exactly is Black Friday anyway?
Black Friday refers to the Friday after Thanksgiving and originally originated as a purely American sales promotion that heralds the Christmas season with huge discounts and special offers. Many employees use this day as a bridge day between Thanksgiving (which always falls on a Thursday) and the following weekend and thus start their Christmas shopping
We all know the images of endless lines in front of stores early in the morning, people immediately rushing through the doors and literally fighting over deals to then sprint to the checkout loaded with TVs and other technology.
Black Friday is thus exclusively a sales event whose sole purpose is increased consumption fueled by discounts. Most of the time, the discounts are not as big as one might think, in fact, a lot is stated with moonshine prices and higher recommended retail prices.
So, before you jump at the enticing Black Friday bargains now coming up, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I really need the product or do I just want to store impulsively?
- Do I already own something similar? If my product is broken, maybe I can fix it?
- Do I necessarily need the product new or can I buy it used?
- Are there sustainable or more regional alternatives I can support instead?
- Can I perhaps directly buy other (Christmas) gifts with or order together with friends?
The countermovement: The Circular Monday
Cyber Monday is the online stores' answer to Black Friday, which traditionally takes place in stationary retail. But not the 'Cyber', but Circular Monday is meant here. This is the sustainable action that has emerged as a protest against the consumption of Black Friday. Instead of "buy buy buy" it is called here "rent - repair- reuse" - things rent, repair and recycle instead of buying new. The goal here is to conserve resources and recycle in order to cause as few CO2 emissions as possible.
This round consumption cycle can look very different. The most diverse companies participate in this Monday to clean out old collections and samples, to offer repairs and many other services. This way, products don't end up in the trash in the first place and are reused beforehand.
On Circular Monday, discounts are mainly given on "circular services" i.e. repair services and products that consist of more than 90% recycled material.
Green Deals - our climate-neutral Black Friday
To make sure you feel good and don't have a guilty conscience on Black Friday, we're turning the black into something green. We offer discounts, but compensate all resulting emissions with environmentally friendly actions.
Those who know us know: For every product sold, a new tree is planted. This year, we would like to go one step further. We have used the year 2021 to implement the climate neutrality project.
Our office and our organic collection, that means our organic cases for iPhones and AirPods as well as our change cases including cords, are climate neutral with immediate effect!
So not only do we continue to plant a tree for every product purchased, but we've looked at every step, from our team's journey, to the electricity used, to the sourcing of raw materials, to the packaging, to the disposal of your Woodcessories product, and reduced the CO2 emissions that are created. All emissions that we cannot avoid in this way, we completely offset with the help of ClimatePartner by supporting climate protection projects. For this purpose, we have chosen projects that do not "just reforest", but protect already existing rainforests and moors in Germany.
Climate neutrality is also important to us when it comes to shipping. Therefore, our products are always shipped climate neutral with DHL or DPD. You pay the shipping costs yourself so that we can reduce the number of impulsive purchases that are subsequently returned. This way a conscious and thoughtful consumption is promoted. As already mentioned, you should therefore consider before ordering whether you can already order Christmas gifts together with friends, if necessary. Make yourselves at the best already now a Wishlist with our products.
So that you do not have to have a guilty conscience on Black Friday with us, you can support one of three important climate protection projects with our climate neutral products! In addition, for every product you buy from us on Black Friday, we will plant not just one, but two trees! This is how we make Black Friday a little bit greener!
